More often than not we don’t think about our central heating systems until something goes wrong and it breaks down.

With so many radiators in our homes it’s easy to neglect them.

Here are 6 things you should look out for that could give you the early signs of something bigger going on:

1. Lots of noise

If you find your system is making a lot of noises when you turn it on and bleeding the radiator hasn’t solved the problem you might have a deeper issue.

For example, the internal mechanism of your radiator system could need attention. Radiators work by heating liquid inside them, there’s a lot going on behind there.

Don’t ignore them crying out for help.

2. You’ve recently got or been told you need a boiler replacement

Especially in older homes when you replace the boiler your plumber should ensure that the system you have can cope with the new system.

This would be the perfect time to get the whole system checked otherwise you could be in for a world of headaches further down the road.

For many people replacing and upgrading some, or all of their radiators at the same time as a boiler refit makes sense.

3. You have leaks

Not only is ignoring a radiator leak bad for the infrastructure of your home but it will end up costing you more money due to an inefficient heating system.

Don’t write off a minor leak, it can be an indication of rust rust around the valve or the pipes, sometimes we don’t even notice a slow leak because the heat of the radiator dries it out.

Check them in the summer when you’re less likely to have the heating on.

4. They need bled a lot

If your radiators seem colder than normal they likely need bled. Or, maybe they aren’t heating up fully.

If you are finding that there is an ongoing problem with radiators needing bled regularly you could have the early signs of a bigger problem.

It might be a case of needing to get the system flushed or an investigation by the plumber to check for more serious issues.

5. Becoming expensive

In general heating costs are rising which means it’s important for you to keep track of what you are paying and when. You should also get an estimation on what you should be paying based on your past usage.

If you find you are paying more than you should your heating system or your boiler might not be working as efficiently as they should.

6. Aesthetics

Most people have standard white radiators in their homes. However, in today’s interior design magazines you’ll find a wealth of new and exciting radiator options coming in a range of styles that can match and complement your home decor.

From black radiators and chrome colours to uprights you may find it’s time to change those radiators simply because you want to change the style.
